Our Gauntlet Selection

We use a variety of leathers for our gloves; deer, elk, bison, and cow.  Most are soft and supple, but we can also make them of harder leather to withstand use in heavy, thorny cover. We try to make the photos come close to the colors we use, but it can change in cyber-space or on individual computers.  The cut out on the trim can be omitted or we can use a buteo or falcon silhouette.  We also make smaller corner reinforcements if that is preferred.

Our usual way of making the gloves is with the saddle and trim flesh (rough) side out.  We can make them with smooth (hair) side out if you prefer, but the bird's talons will tear the skin over time and make it look rough.  Having the rough side out, the glove can be washed and oiled and look like new again.

E-mail Becky accipitress@msn.com to see what we have available or tell her what you would like.  We can make custom gauntlets with a hand tracing or a  basic small, medium, or large, and a description of leather type and color.  We can also add linings of various materials, if desired, for warmth.  We currently have sheep skin, rabbit fur, and 200 milligram Thinsolate (R).  A slightly larger glove will be required for using a liner.

                                                                           Leather Preparation and Maintenance

For $5.00 extra, we will oil the gloves with Huberd's Shoe Grease or olive oil.  We put on at least two coats to allow the leather to soak it up.  The second coat then smoothes it out and gives a uniform look to it. Most of the gloves shown are oiled.  It darkens the rough side leather quite a bit in most cases.  An unoiled glove can be brushed with a nylon or brass  brush or washed with dish detergent to keep clean, but blood will soak in and can destroy the fiber of the leather over time.  Never use heat to dry a leather glove, but indirect warmth may be used to help oil soak into it.  There is no extra charge for gloves we have in stock that have been oiled.  We are still in the learning curve and have been told by some people that they prefer to not have them oiled.
