INTRODUCTION.

The Northern goshawk had rarely been bred in captivity prior to the late 1990s. A growing interest in breeding the goshawk developed out of both an extreme love of this bird and a political climate that threatened to shut off access to this species from the wild. This, despite a stable and even possibly expanding breeding range.

One of the benefits of breeding goshawks is that a wonderful relationship will develop between you and your bird. A tremendous sense of well being will become apparent. You will be able to do things and take liberties that would be otherwise impossible.

What follows, represents four years of intensive research into the breeding behavior and medical management of the goshawk. New techniques were developed. Problems were identified and solved. The information presented here will streamline your efforts and prevent problems that could otherwise limit productivity or cost you the health of a bird.

The first four articles in this series were written in early 1999. Since then more information has come to light that is important. The fifth article was written in 1998. An updated addendum with ideas developed during this time, is included. Some of my ideas were formed over small sample sizes. As information evolves it will be updated and added to each new edition.
